My City My Place
UDAIPUR
Udaipur, lovingly known as the City of Lakes, is one of the most treasured places in India. Set against the beautiful Aravalli hills and surrounded by shimmering blue lakes, the city feels like a painting that has come to life. For anyone who has grown up here or even visited once, Udaipur is not just a location on the map -it is a feeling, a peaceful comfort and a celebration of culture and history.
The story of Udaipur begins in 1559, when Maharana Udai Singh II founded the city after leaving Chittorgarh. The Rajput rulers of Mewar were known for their courage and strong values and even today, Udaipur reflects that royal spirit. The palaces, temples and forts stand proudly as reminders of a time when kings ruled with honour and lived with grace. Walking through the old city, it feels as if history whispers from every corner and each stone has a story to tell.
People from across the world travel to Udaipur for many reasons. Some come to experience its romantic atmosphere – the soft glow of sunset over Lake Pichola, the reflection of palaces on the water and the calm breeze that flows through the city. Others come for its heritage and cultural depth, because few places in India preserve their traditions as beautifully as Udaipur does. The scenic beauty of the hills, the charm of narrow colourful lanes and the warm nature of its people make Udaipur a place that welcomes every traveller like a guest of honour.
Among the many wonders of Udaipur, the City Palace stands out like a crown. It rises above the lake, shining in the sunlight and inside it, visitors find galleries filled with ancient paintings, royal armour and priceless memories of the Mewar dynasty. Just below lies Lake Pichola, where the gentle ripples of water carry reflections of temples, havelis and ghats. A boat ride on the lake – especially during sunset – feels almost magical, as the sky turns golden and the palaces glow like pearls. Jag Mandir, sitting calmly in the middle of the lake, adds its own beauty to this charming scene.
Another favourite spot for both locals and tourists is Fateh Sagar Lake, known for its peaceful vibe and lively food stalls. In the evenings, families, friends and couples gather by the lake to enjoy the cool breeze, street snacks and the soothing view of the hills. High above the city stands Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace, offering one of the best panoramic views of Udaipur. Watching the sun go down from this hilltop feels like watching nature paint its finest masterpiece.
Udaipur is also home to beautiful cultural sites like Jagdish Temple, known for its detailed carvings and spiritual calmness and Saheliyon ki Bari, a garden built for royal ladies. Bagore ki Haveli is another gem – a place where traditional Rajasthani dances, music, puppetry and folk performances come alive every evening, reminding visitors of the vibrant culture of Rajasthan.
The best time to visit Udaipur is from October to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant, perfect for sightseeing. Monsoon is another special season, when the Aravalli hills turn lush green and the lakes fill up, making the city look fresh and more beautiful than ever.
Festivals bring a different energy to Udaipur. During the Mewar Festival, the city lights up with folk dances, music and colourful processions. Women celebrate Gangaur with decorated idols and traditional rituals, while the entire city glows during Diwali, making it a sight to remember. Shilpgram Utsav is another major attraction, where artisans from different parts of India display their craft, dance forms and cultural heritage. These festivals show how deeply Udaipur respects its traditions and how beautifully it celebrates unity in diversity.
Food is also an important part of the Udaipur experience. The taste of Dal Baati Churma, Gatte ki Sabzi, Pyaaz Kachori, fresh Poha, crisp Jalebi and the famous Kulhad Coffee at Fateh Sagar are flavours that stay with you long after you leave. For sweet lovers, Ghewar is a must-try, especially during festivals. The food of Udaipur carries the warmth of its people and the richness of its heritage.
What makes Udaipur truly special is not just its monuments or lakes, but its people. Known for their politeness, hospitality and cultural pride, the people of Udaipur make visitors feel at home. Many families still practice traditional arts like miniature painting, pottery, silver jewellery making and folk music. Their dedication keeps the city’s culture alive and thriving.
Udaipur is a city where time slows down, where every sunrise brings a peaceful charm and every sunset feels like a blessing. It is a place where modern life blends beautifully with ancient traditions. Whether someone comes for its history, its festivals, its food or simply its calm atmosphere, Udaipur leaves an impression on the heart.
For those who call it home, Udaipur is more than a city – it is a part of their identity. And for those who visit, it becomes a memory they wish to relive again and again. Truly, Udaipur is “My City, My Place”- a perfect example of beauty, culture and warmth living together in harmony.
